David Beckham has revealed that he "didn't expect" the Spice Girls to reunite at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party.

The former football star has revealed that the iconic girl group's recent reunion at Victoria's birthday party in April was not planned.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night, David explained that the group - made up of his wife Victoria, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm - hadn't performed together on stage in more than 15 years.

"It's actually been 12 years since they did the Olympics in the U.K. but over 15 years since they actually were on a stage together," he told the talk show host. "So obviously having them all there that night, and I didn't expect them to all get up on stage."

David, 49, said he had planned to show a video of him and his children with Victoria recreating the music video for the Spice Girls' 1996 hit Mama for the event, but the plan didn't go as he expected.

"But I had a whole video planned where me and my kids recreated the Mama video," he said. "My son, who plays the guitar and sings, had a song, and he sang 'Mama,' and all of a sudden all the girls got up - and I'm their biggest fan, you know? I tend not to tell my wife that. I tend to tell her that I fancied her, but she was a Spice Girl. I love that about her... So I was a fan."

Victoria celebrated her milestone birthday with a star-studded party at Oswald's private members' club in Mayfair, London, on 20 April.
